Bowls National Pairs Championships 2022
Brixham bowlers Bryan Coad and David Farley entered the National Pairs Championships for the first time this year. They were drawn at home in the first round against the 2021 National Pairs Runners Up, County Pairs Champions and England internationals Sam Tolchard and Louis Rideout who have been selected for the Men’s Pairs competition in the Summer Commonwealth Games.
Over 40 members of the Brixham Bowling Club turned out on a cold grey evening to support their players and enjoy the opportunity to watch two top international players on their green. Remarkably Farley and Coad got off to a flier as they rushed into 9-0 lead after just 3 ends as the opposition struggled to adapt their game to the Brixham green. Over the next few ends the game was more even as the teams traded shots. With the score at 14-6 after 9 ends, the half way point in the game, the belief that the home pair could snatch a shock win began to grow. The 10th end heralded the start of the expected fight back as Tolchard and Rideout picked up 6 shots to close the gap to 2 shots. Was this the turning point of the match? After 13 ends it was advantage to the visitors 16 – 14 as their class was really showing. With the temperature falling and the light fading so was Brixham’s hopes. To their credit Coad and Farley began a magnificent fight back as they started bowling more accurately and with greater concentration. The spectators were mesmerised with several wrapped in blankets as they struggled to keep warm in the fading light.

After 17 ends Brixham had drawn level at 17-17. One end to go – could they do it? The atmosphere around and on the green was very tense as the last end started. After the lead bowlers Coad and Rideout had both bowled their 4 woods Brixham were one shot up thanks to a brilliant wood from Coad which rested on the jack. Farley‘s first wood stopped short. Was he trying to put in a blocker? Up stepped Tolchard. He fired his first shot into the cluster of woods and the jack with such force that the jack flew into the side ditch. Dead end! The last end had to be played again. What drama! Frustration for the Brixham pair. The psychological advantage must be with the visitors. The players had been on the green for over 2 and a half hours.
And so to the finale of this amazing match. Coad was on fire. Showing no sign of nerves he bowled his first wood on to the jack, his third just in front and the fourth just behind. Great positioning. Rideout could not respond and Brixham were two up with Farley and Tolchard to bowl. You could hear a pin drop around the green as the home fans looked on in anticipation of a massive upset, Farley dropped his first shot short. Up stepped Tolchard who found a gap through the cluster of bowls to hit one of the holding woods. Brixham now just one up. He then fired to take out the second holding wood to level the match. All square and both players had one shot to go. Up to this point Farley had been trying to put in blockers. With his last shot he knocked a home wood on to the jack. Remarkably Brixham one up again just one Tolchard shot from victory. Tolchard held his nerve as he fired to remove the Brixham wood for the Kings pair to snatch victory. A shot of a true champion. Disappointment for the spectators was followed by a warm round of applause in acknowledgement of true class and the end of a contest which will be remembered for years to come. Tolchard had grasped victory from the jaws of defeat but Coad and Farley can look back on this match with pride.

BRIXHAM BOWLING CLUB GETTING ACTIVE
After a depressingly long winter of cold, wet, windy weather and covid restrictions, members of Brixham Bowling Club are looking forward to a spring and summer of sunshine, blue skies, warmth and the opportunity to play the game they love. Bowling clothes are being unpacked, washed and ironed (hopefully they will still be able to get into their kit after such a long break) and woods are being polished. The bowling green at Furzeham is already looking immaculate and almost ready for play thanks to the hard work and tender loving care of Bill Gray and his ground maintenance team.
After being cancelled last season due to the virus, league competitions will be back this season. The men will be fielding a team in Division 1 of the Mid Devon League as well as 2 teams in the County Over 55s competitions. The Ladies A and B teams will be competing in Divisions 1 and 4 of the South Devon League while a mixed team will be playing in the Riviera Triples League.
Several members distinguished themselves in County competitions last season with three teams winning through six knock out rounds before finishing as runners up in 3 finals in September. David Moseby and Thelma Bunney were also awarded their County badges – all tremendous achievements
On the social side, Wednesday club nights start on May 4th and to date 33 friendly matches against touring teams and local clubs have been booked. Our qualified coaches will be available to work with players new to the game on Monday mornings throughout the season. There are plenty of bowling opportunities for players of all abilities to develop their skills and get involved in matches.
For anyone considering taking up bowls or perhaps thinking of joining Brixham Bowling Club, you are invited to come along to a ‘Try It Day’ at 10 am on Saturday April 16th. If you have no woods, the club will provide some on the day. For more information you can contact Men’s Captain Barry Goldsmith on 01803 845251 or Ladies Vice Captain Thelma Bunney on 01803 857457. You can also visit the club website on www.brixhambowlingclub.co.uk

The Devon county final were held yesterday, with around 150 "fans"watching including 15 from Brixham.
Both Fave Farley & Paul Harris (Pairs) and Dave Moseby, Bryan Coad and John Boyt (Triples) won their semi finals!!
Unfortunately, luck ran out in the finals!
Dave and Paul lost by eight.
Our triples team were 14 - 14 with one end to go. In the final end they were holding shot with two woods to go, but sadly lost 15 - 14 !!
However, this should be viewed as a success for our club, and bodes well for next season.

David will be sorely missed in the future and all our thoughts and prayers are with Pat and the family at this very sad time. Further details will follow when known.

We have sent the following press release to the local newspapers.
Roll Up For A Roll Up With Brixham Bowling Club
With spring upon us and the news about the pandemic looking positive, members of Brixham Bowling Club are looking forward to the start of a new season. The club is organising a ‘Bowls Try It Day’ for members of the local community. If you are looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to keep fit and meet new people after the isolation of the lockdown restrictions you may wish to come along to the club and see if the game is for you.
The club is situated at Furzeham Green on Nelson Road in Brixham with its superb views of the harbour and the breakwater below. The club facilities are open 7 days a week from mid April to mid September.
Bowls is an outdoor game that can be played by people of all ages and abilities in a covid-safe environment with participants being able to keep within the Government social distance and hygiene guidelines on the greens.
A whole range of bowling opportunities are available from practice roll ups, social games and competitive matches against club members, as happened during the restrictions of last season. If the anticipated easing of restrictions and vaccination programme takes place it is likely that competitive league and knock-out cup competitions against local clubs as well as friendly matches against touring teams will also be possible this Summer.
If you are interested in taking up bowls for the first time or are experienced and are considering taking up the game again then do come along and meet us and ‘have a go’ Sets of bowls will be provided on the day. All you will need is a pair of flat shoes (to prevent damage to the green) and plenty of curiosity and enthusiasm. We plan to run try it day in the second half of April. The date will be fixed once we get the final go ahead from the Government and Bowls England.
If you want to find out more do visit the club website or telephone Barry on 01803 845251 or Mo on 01803 853977
They will contact you once the date is fixed, or check the website home page.

I have just heard that Vera Bond passed away yesterday.
Vera was a stalwart of our club over many years, having played in both the ladies A and B teams representing our club in many of the various leagues.
She always had a smile for everyone and really enjoyed coming to the club with Margaret in her latter years, to watch the games. She was a credit to our club and to her family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret and the family, at this very sad time.
RIP Vera.
15 February 2021
It is with sadness that I have to inform you all, that a well loved and respected member of our club, Doug Barnard, has passed away.
Doug was a stalwart of our club, who was for several years our green keeper as well as being a very valued member of our men's "A" team. He was also a life member of the club.
The club over the years has a lot to thank Doug and his wife Wendy for, as between them they achieved a very high standard in their bowling, not to mention Doug's dedication to our green which was considered to be one of the best in Devon.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Wendy and the family at this very sad time.

Torbay Lottery
At the present time the members who contribute to the lottery bring in over £450 a year to the club. This will be an important contribution to the club next year if we have reduced numbers of bowlers and visiting teams. If you are interested in participating, Mo Penhaligon has all the details, and can advise.
Dear member,
The Government expects that outdoor sports, including Bowls, will be able to restart from the 29th March. However, we do not yet know what conditions will still apply. Bowls England has told us that they will provide us with detailed guidance on Covid compliance as soon as possible after 29th March to enable a full season of bowling to take place if at all possible.
In view of this the Management Committee has decided to postpone opening the green by a week until Saturday 24th April to assess the new guidance and make any necessary preparations. We hope to operate as near to normal as possible and we will provide you with more information as soon as the situation becomes clearer.
Subscriptions are normally payable at the pre-season meeting, which this year will be a virtual one. Consequently subscriptions, (cash or cheque) should be sent to the Treasurer at 16, Nelson Road, Brixham, TQ5 8BH by 17th April. Alternatively, you can pay by bank transfer to Brixham Bowling Club 20-60-88 50242179 making sure you identify the payment by name.
Further details will follow as soon as we have more instructive information from Bowls England and Bowls Devon.
Thank you for your patience,
David B. (on behalf of the management committee)

At our last committee meeting, on Thursday 18th March 2021, and in view of the current covid restrictions and information from Bowls England, it was decided to postpone the Club Pre-Season meeting until a later date. The proposed opening day was also moved by one week, to Saturday 24th April 2021. (More information to follow).

Please make payment between 1st April and no later than 17th April 2021.

Limited opening of the green
It has been decided by the management committee that Brixham Bowling Club will be opening the green on the 1st June 2020 under strict conditions as set out by Bowls England.
As I am confident all members will understand the strict guidelines taken because of the corona virus containment and the opportunity to get some bowling this season.
It was decided that there will be three rinks open to adhere to social distancing.
No more than two players per rink; either same household or two friends.
There will be four sessions per day as follows:
10.00 to 12.00
12.30 to 2.30
3.00 to 5.00
5.30 to 7.30
Please note there will be a 30 minute break per game where there must be no contact
with those coming to play their game.
Players must not turn up any earlier than 10 minutes before their allotted time.
All games have to be booked in advance and you are not permitted to turn up hoping for a spare unused rink. This is a condition of the guidelines set down by Bowls England.
The clubhouse will only be open for the use of the toilets and hand washing facilities, with only one lady and/or one gent inside. One in and one out.
Ken and Mo Penhaligon will be operating a telephone booking system on 01803 843020
In order that members can book in advance and considering the uptake there may be a restriction on the number of bookings any one person can make but hopefully not.
Finally only paid up members of the club for this year will be eligible to play because of insurance and other factors.
Further Instructions on the rules and conditions of play will follow, but bookings will be open from Tuesday 26 May.

Please note that all MDL and SDLBL matches for the 2020 season have been cancelled. This affects the Men's A & B teams, and the Ladies' A, B & C teams.
Furthermore, the Men's Over 55s Triples League matches have been cancelled.
The Riviera Triples league will be reviewed in June, recommencing in July if circumstances permit.
Furthermore all Bowls Devon competitions have been cancelled.
No matches will be played at our green until at least the end of May, so expect updates on this to appear here later.
Whilst frustrating for all our members, it is imperative that we all do everything to keep this virus at bay, and prevent its spread.

A Cayman Golf competition was held between Brixham Bowling Club and our local rivals, Brixham St. Mary's.
On a sunny, warm October day conditions were perfect. Players went round in pairs, the lowest score on either team winning the hole.
The final result showed that both sides had won the same number of matches, so the final result depended on which team had won the most holes. Once the mathematics were complete, Brixham was declared the winner. It was a very enjoyable morning, and thanks to Barry Goldsmith for organising it.

As you know, Peter Dyer, a very respected past member of this club, a perfect gentleman, passed peacefully away on 23rd September 2019 at Cross Park Care home, aged 92 years.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret and family at this sad time.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at All Saints Church, Brixham, on Wednesday 16th October at 1pm, followed by refreshments at the Berry Head Hotel.
No black and no flowers, but donations to Dementia UK please.

Today saw the annual Reed Trophy competition. This involves teams of three people, each bowling two woods. Teams play three matches against three different teams, each match comprising three "sets" of four ends. The winning team is the one who accumulates the highest points total (2 for a win, 1 for a draw); in the event of a tie, it's the highest number of shots. Twelve teams were represented on a sunny (albeit chilly) afternoon. The winning team was led by Mo Penhaligon, ably assisted by Maggie Goldsmith and Mick Stephens.
The Reed Trophy was presented to the winners by the club's President, David Hayden.

Captains' Day 2019
Every year it is a tradition at Brixham Bowling Club for the Men’s and Lady’s captains to select a charity for which they wish to raise money. Last year £900 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care. This year the captains Mo Penhaligon and David Moseby chose to support sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis a project particularly dear to captain Mo. She told members,
‘My reason for choosing CF is because my daughter is a paediatric CF specialist lead nurse working out of Treliske Hospital in Truro. She covers the whole of Cornwall and currently has 38 children with CF. One of the worst aspects of her role is having to tell the parents of a beautiful 10 day old baby that their child has CF. She then, like a lot of areas of the NHS, has to struggle with finding funding for equipment and projects that can enhance the treatment of these young people. One project recently that she had to get funding for was putting together individual ‘sterile’ activity packs for her children to have when receiving treatment in hospital as they can’t use any of the toys and craft materials used by other children due to the risk of cross infection.’
A lot of hard work went into organising the Captain’s Charity Day which is always earmarked as one of the big events of the season. The clubhouse was suitably decorated with balloons and bunting to provide a carnival atmosphere for the afternoon. After the heavy rain of the preceding days, the weather cleared and the sun shone on the bowling green where over 80 club members, their friends and family took on a variety of unique challenges including target bowls and golf, rubber chicken chucking and spent money on various table stalls scattered around the club.
Club members also generously donated many items for the raffle and auction held later in the afternoon.
At 4pm the fun and games drew to a close with the grand finale – the Giant Spider Challenge. Everyone paid £1 to have a go at winning the prize for bowling their wood at the centrally placed black plastic spider on the green. Stationed around the green with one foot in the ditch everyone was poised to fire their shot all at the same time. When the judge’s countdown reached zero, the ballistic noise of the woods colliding with each other as they were fired from all directions in their frantic race to finish closest the spider reverberated across the green. It was a fitting end to the games session of the afternoon. Ken Penhaligon was delighted to receive the Spider Champion prize although his achievement was more luck than judgement.
It was then back into the clubhouse for the award of prizes and the auction and raffle. David Moseby was in his element using his ‘Del Boy’ charm to encourage, cajole and coerce pundits to raise the stakes in their bidding. The raffle raised a remarkable £245 and the auction £200. The brilliant sea shanty singers Missin Tackle provided the entertainment prior to the Fish and Chip supper delivered by David’s in Bolton Street. Everyone was in good voice as Missin Tackle came back to close the proceedings. A record £1015 was collected for the Cystic Fibrosis charity taking the total collected so far this year to over £1200. Mo is hoping to increase the total to £1400 by the end of the bowls season. The plan is to donate half the total to the Treliske hospital where her daughter works and the rest to the national CF Foundation. We finish the report with the thoughts of a very proud Mo Penhaligon
‘When I told my daughter how much we had raised and that it will go to her and the CF Trust her comment was ‘That is an amazing sum of money that is not only going to help children currently living with CF but children in the future through research’.
‘My thoughts on the day - I cannot believe we raised so much through the generosity of our members, their families and friends by playing silly games such as chucking a plastic chicken and putting marbles through the hole in the bottom of a flower pot with chopsticks. A fantastic afternoon filled with fun, laughter and good company. I was delighted by the support that we had from our wider community in Brixham; Missin Tackle for entertaining us; delicious fish and chips from David in Bolton Street delivered hot and crispy together with a generous donation; Terry at Boundary Butchers in Pillar Avenue for donation of meat vouchers; Cayman Golf for donation of a game for 4; and Princess Theatre for tickets to see Cats.
Isn’t it amazing what a community can achieve when it pulls together!’

We have just learned this morning of the death of one of our oldest members.
I am sad to announce that Roy Moore passed peacefully away this morning, in Torbay Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Roy was a valued member of our club for a number of years and was a very good competitive bowler, with many trophies and wins under his belt. He was also a very good organiser of many of our successful club events over the years.
Latterly he was running our Over 55's teams as they competed in the league. His objective was for them to win their section this year, (which it looks as if they will) but sadly he will not be here to enjoy their success.
Roy will be deeply missed by fellow bowlers not only from our club but throughout the bay and beyond, where he was well known.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jenny and the family during this sad time.
A minute's silence was observed before Tuesday's A Team match - photos below.

The Rose Bowl Trophy returned to Brixham after its brief travel up the road to St. Marys. This is an annual fixture against our near neighbours featuring four rinks of men and 2 rinks of ladies.
After the match we were treated to an excellent buffet. Thanks to all involved in organising the evening.

Some of our newer members will not have known Maurice, who was a very valued member of our club for several years now and he was also a past President, a position that he held for many years.
He had been ill for a little while now and sadly he passed away last weekend. He will be missed by us all.
His funeral will be held in "Fore Street Methodist Church" on Friday 12 July.
There will initially be a private family service, which will be followed by a Service of Celebration for his life.
The Celebration Service will start at 3pm and is open to all.

Afterwards everyone is invited across to the Christian Community Centre for his wake and some refreshments.

The annual coffee morning painting workshop took place this week, and once again the ladies excelled in their painting skills. They become more versatile each year!
This time, they painted a poppy for a card in watercolour and ink. Once again, each image produced was different but very good.

Isle of Wight "Tour"
Fourteen members of the club crossed the Solent for a bowls tournament at the Warners Bembridge Coast Hotel.
We had three rinks entered in the competition, each playing three matches. Although no-one reached the finals, there were some excellent matches. Bowls wasn't the only sport on the agenda, with everyone participating in golf, table tennis, snooker, darts and (not forgetting) Jenga!
The weather was marvellous, as was the hotel food.
We also won two quizzes, earning us a fridge magnet and keyring.
Our last day included a visit to Osborne House, which was well worth the visit.
A few photos from the trip can be found here.

The plans for a closing day bowls competition were derailed by the monsoon conditions. However, despite this, the afternoon continued with tea and cakes, and a picture quiz.
At the end of the session the club was able to present a cheque for over £900 to Marie Curie Cancer Care, and Jenny Hopkins thanked the club for raising this significant amount.

Dave's rink again won by 25 - 8, and Roy's rink won convincingly 24 - 12.
